About the Item

A large Japanese silk embroidery tapestry circa 18th century Edo period. Possibly an altar tablecloth originally, the embroidered textile panel showcases meticulous handwork with an extremely dense design depicts repeated motifs of birds in flight among lush peony blossoms, vines and floral background. The central panel is surrounded by a rectangular band of flower pattern sandwiched between two linear borders. The outer skirts feature larger peonies and pheasant birds interspersed with a wide range of animals, both real and mythological including lion, tiger, deer, horse, elephant and Qiling. The tone-on-tone color of this textile is extraordinary from the use of gold and silver threads in a similar colorway with subtle contrast. The whole shimmering effect under the light is a delightful sight to behold. The tapestry is not mounted or framed. It has no backing as shown revealing the embroidery needlework and one side with small metal loops sewn in. Textile is of significant age and the condition is on the distressed side and will benefit from flattening and framing instead of kept being folded. Please examine photos for typical condition issues before purchasing as it is a final sale.
