About the Item

Woven in vivid green pure handspun silk with cream and magenta stripes, extra long sleeves denoting a wealthy owner. Afghanistan. A silk chapan (a Turcoman term for an over coat), trimmed with fine embroidered collar and black and red edging. Antique Turkmen Silk Chapan Robe, Cream and Cream Striped Textile Dressing Gown The sleeves are impractically long for arms and perhaps indicate the high status or wealth of the wearer, having servants in attendance and little need to move his hands. The late Afghan president Karzai notably often wore such chapans. This example could be adapted to make a more practical shorter sleeved dressing gown or rather flamboyant garment for a party. The Nomads Tent collection of vintage and antique tribal costume. Many of these items were part of our Textiles of the Southern Silk Route. They were acquired in the Tehran grand bazaar and other places, mostly over 20 years ago. Some are as late as 50 years ago, some are clearly older. Condition is generally good to excellent with a few signs of expected wear from age. Many have been extremely little used, being brought out for rare and special occasions, until handed in to the bazaar traders who may hang on to them for decades before being shown to us!

Handmade Kilim Rugs, Antique Wool Jajim, Striped Red Cream Wool Textile
Located in Wembley, GB
A practical variation on the flat-weave Kilim, this Caucasian coverlet, or jajim, features a bold, inherently versatile pattern of multi-width stripes perfectly suited for Mid-Century Modern interiors. Ochre and umber stripes with narrow outlines decorate the fiery cinnabar ground while creating a stylish and sophisticated pattern yet totally understated. These graphic stripes, which would be equally at home in a western design repertoire, still manage to retain their rustic sensibilities. Hidden variations give the seemingly balanced stripes an inconspicuous asymmetric repeat. Pinstripe accents in neutral hues of white and walnut brown emphasise the boldly banded stripes and offset the high-chroma ground. Like many of the most sought-after tribal textiles, this Caucasian Jajim has natural modernity and a Minimalist aesthetic imbued with ethnographic qualities that enliven modern interiors. This piece is in great condition, ready for use in any home interior. Handmade Kilim rugs, antique wool Jajim...

20th Century Uzbek Cotton and Silk Ikat Chapan Robe
Located in London, GB
20th century Uzbek cotton and silk ikat chapan robe Uzbekistan, 20th Century Height 122cm, width 153cm Historically, an ikat chapan robe was a status symbol worn by nomadic tribes and settles in Uzbekistan as well as other Central Asian regions. Paired with belt, tunic, and trousers, the brightness of colours and intricacy of the embroidery were indicators of the wealth of the wearer. The robe in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is brightly coloured with large, red and yellow geometrical patterns on a cream-coloured base. The inside of the robe is also patterned, with red floral motifs formed in a geometrical and symmetrical pattern. The outside trim of this silk and cotton ikat chapan robe is elegantly embroidered with white and red patterns. Such embroidery carried symbolic meaning, protecting the wearer from evil spirits. The long sleeves are a beautiful design feature, intending to cover the wearer’s hands and protect them from cold temperatures. Worn by both men and women, this eye-catching Uzbek robe...
