About the Item
This medallion, which would have been sewn on a robe, depicts a number of symbols on a background of light and dark blue clouds. The central symbol is Fu, which represents the power to judge, while the axe head below represents the power to punish. To the right and the left of the Fu is a plate of grain or rice, which represents the country's ability to feed its people, and a waterweed, which represents purity. The symbol at the top, which looks like a cup with two cats, may be a variation of the symbol of the two metal cups, which represent filial piety. Traditionally, one cup is decorated with a monkey to symbolize cleverness, the other with a tiger to symbolize strength.
These round medallions are relatively rare. The embroidery is in very good condition for its age, and the colors are still fresh.
