About the Item

An intricate embroidery panel on an indigo blue silk background from late Qing dynasty circa 19th century. This work of textile art finely depicts an artistic arrangement of objects of vertu that traditionally belong to the desk of a scholar. The group consists of a hanging jade bi disc on an elaborately carved display stand, a small vase with flowers, a cloth bundle with a stack of books, a long ceremonial Ruyi scepter with tassels, a scroll, a lute, and a writing instrument. Surrounding this group, there are linear borders of gold threads inset with blue and white scrolling blossom. Above it, there is a panel of peony flowers, symbol of nobility and wealth. Below it, two trellis panels flank the symbol of Shou (longevity) rendered in red in the center. This type of artful display of scholar objects, coupled with various auspicious symbols, was popular in the wealthy literary as well as noble and imperial households, as a display of refined taste. The subject matter was more frequently found in the paintings rather than embroidery, which makes this piece unusual. The current panel may be made as part of a larger wall hanging or decorative curtain befitted for a scholar's study. The deep indigo color provides a great contrast to the very fine needlework. Many different embroidery techniques were employed to sufficiently render the picture a realistic and dimensional appearance. Displayed in a late gilt wood frame with plexiglass. The silk panel itself is 23 by 34. With frame it is 26 by 37.

Wear consistent with age and use. minor loose threads on the linear border as shown. slight undulation noticed from the angel under the frame common in silk textile framing. Minor wear on the late gilt frame and backing paper.
