About the Item

A spectacular antique Chinese embroidery panel dated from Qing dynasty (circa 19th century), professionally framed with linen mat, purchased from Galerie Du Monde in Hong Kong. This example, entailed with many stitch techniques including, satin, couching, extensive and very fine Peking knots and forbidden knots, depicts two noble ladies in a garden setting. In front of a pavilion, one lady is kneeing to make wishes in front of an incent burner set above a Stand, while the other lady stands behind, holding a fan on her back and attentively looking on. The garden is anchored with the pavilion in its center, a bridge in front and clusters of landscape Taihu rocks priced in Chinese garden design, among trees and plants. On the dark indigo background, the tour-de-force light colored silk thread embroidery presents itself almost as a stylized low relief painting. A wide border of splendid peonies among vining flowers surround the central panel and complete the piece. The pictorial design of beauties in garden is a Classic motif in Chinese art. Here, the details were furthered to story-telling. One of the four Classic Chinese beauties, DiaoChan, was famously associated with making wishes in front of incense under a full moon. The lovely piece is presented in a museum quality silver frame with linen mat. Gallery label remains on the back.
