About the Item

A Japanese textile panel with embroidered picture work circa late Meiji period (1900s) presented in a gilt wood frame with silk mat. The work depicts a lovely arrangement of two different varieties of Japanese chrysanthemum flowers. Silk threads of white and slight metallic silver and pale gold were used for the embroidery work. Satin, chain and knot stiches were employed to create the image. The poetic composition is relatively sparse, creating a nice contrast with the pure black background. The work reflects an aesthetic often seen in free style ink paintings when minimal strokes were used to achieve great ambience. Matted in a silk border and presented in a wood frame with gold leaf corners. Some gold leaf gilt losses exposing the red background. We think it is charming in a vintage way and prefer no touch ups or re-gilding.
