About the Item

This strikingly coloured Phulkari is from Punjab, India. It was hand-crafted from silk and cotton, with silk being used for the embroidery. Phulkari’s are a form of wedding shawl and are used by bride’s amidst marriage ceremonies. What makes Phulkari’s exclusive is the fact that they were crafted by women for their own use and sometimes passed on through generations. Given this they were not openly on sale. Despite being over 100 years old it has retained much of its original colour. There are some tears and loose threads highlighted in the images as a result of its age.
