About the Item

This rare persimmon tannin–dyed washi rug dates from the late Meiji to Taisho period (early 20th century) and was traditionally used to protect tatami mats from sunlight or serve as a floor covering for work-related tasks. Crafted from handmade washi paper, the piece was repaired over time with older recycled papers—some dating back to the Edo and early Meiji periods—applied in layered patches during the Showa period. These seemingly spontaneous overlays form a rich, textural surface, offering a uniquely expressive, almost collage-like aesthetic. While the kakishibu-coated side is intended as the front, the reverse reveals an equally engaging composition, allowing either face to be displayed as a compelling work of abstract material art. Its lightweight nature and bold visual character make it ideal for wall display, sculptural installation, or as a statement piece in interiors that embrace imperfection, layering, and timeworn materials. It may also be reimagined as a poetic tablecloth, adding texture and depth to a dining setting.
