About the Item

This unique and elegant textile with a phoenix pattern, known as Nagasaki Sarasa, was made in Nagasaki Prefecture (Kyushu) during the Taisho era. The fabric was likely intended for decorative use in bedding. Featuring a phoenix motif, it embodies themes of prosperity, rebirth, and virtue—elements often associated with the elite. When it was created, it was most likely crafted for a privileged group of people. Even after more than a century, this textile remains in impressive condition, with only slight fading. While there are a few minor stains and small holes in certain sections, they do not detract from its overall appeal. This piece can be used for display as a sheer hanging fabric near a window, as an elegant room divider, or as a striking piece of wall art.
