A Large Fine Mulberry-Bark Tapa
About the Item
Description
Barkcloth, ngatu, made of bark (likely paper mulberry). Rectangular cloth, light brown in colour and made from sections of cloth pasted together with tapioca. Decoration is divided into five vertical sections, and five horizontal sections, leading to 25 rectangular blocks. Within each vertical line of blocks are specific emblems or designs in brown and black outlines and this is repeated twice. From the outside towards the middle, vertical blocks of birds with numbers between 14 and 18, boar, sun, moon, stars and trees, a larger bird, and a crest or coat of arms. Geometric designs including lettering make up the middle vertical blocks.
