About the Item

A rare and historically significant brocade silk robe from 19th-century Japan, originally created for use in Noh theatre, one of the country’s oldest and most revered performing arts. Woven in vibrant silk threads with elaborate motifs, the robe exemplifies the theatrical elegance and symbolic richness associated with classical Japanese performance costume. This full-size garment (133 x 104 cm / 52.5 x 41 in) would have been worn by a principal actor during a Noh performance, where visual impact and textile artistry are essential to the storytelling tradition. Weighing approximately 1.35 kg (3 lb), the piece still radiates visual power and presence. Due to the robe’s considerable age, the silk is fragile, and signs of wear are present throughout — including loose threads, fabric thinning, and deterioration typical for antique textiles of this kind. Conservation may be advised for long-term preservation, especially if the robe is to be displayed. Despite its condition, this robe remains a compelling and rare example of traditional Japanese theatre costume and a valuable artifact for collectors of textiles, performing arts history, or Japanese decorative arts.
