About the Item

A Rare Important Qajar 19th Century Ghalamkar Block Printed Tent Tigers Peacocks This extraordinary set of three monumental textile panels once formed part of a ceremonial tent from the Qajar period, created using the intricate ghalamkar technique, a labor intensive method of hand block printing on cotton using natural dyes. Such textiles were typically commissioned for royal or aristocratic use, serving both decorative and symbolic purposes during formal gatherings, outdoor receptions, or military encampments. Each panel is filled with dynamic imagery. Fierce tigers stride with power and authority, while majestic peacocks, symbols of beauty, immortality, and royal splendor, perch gracefully amidst lush floral motifs. The visual language is deliberate, evoking themes of strength, prosperity, and protection, all central to Qajar court aesthetics. Surviving examples of this scale and completeness are exceedingly rare. Together, these three panels represent not only a triumph of textile craftsmanship but also a window into the visual and ceremonial culture. Their exceptional state of preservation, rich iconography, and imposing presence distinguish them as important works of historic and artistic significance. Dimensions: 10 x 7 feet (each panel) and 43 1/2 x 70 inches (textile piece).
