About the Item

Tana Toraja Sekomandi Ikat Selendang (Shoulder Cloth/Scarf/Wall Hanging), Sulawesi, Indonesia. This warp ikat textile is a woven single panel. The cotton threads are tie dyed using vegetal red, blues and blacks, made by weavers in the highlands of Sulawesi. The motif is referred to as lelen sepu (a betelnut container), symbolizing the need to create social harmony. The design also is often called tossok balekoan which represents a niddy-noddy that is used for making skeins of yarn after being spun from cotton.
