Antoni Gaudi Milà no.4 Door Knob, Polished Brass, Spain, Modernism

About the Item

Solid cast brass with polished finish. An assortment of early 20th-century metalwork fixtures are cast from Gaudí's hand. Antoni Gaudí (1852 - 1926) is among the most internationally famous Spanish architects, his unorthodox approach is still considered ground-breaking to this day. Metalwork fixtures were created by Antoni Gaudí for his diverse architectural creations. Eight fittings in this collection are exact replicas of items that were originally created for the Casa Milà, Calvet, and Batlló. Gaudí used his hands and fingers to crush or penetrate clay to create an impression of his hand, which was subsequently cast in polished brass. The handles form a distinctive, ergonomic design that seems to breathe in its brass body as they adapt to the grasp of a human hand. His ingenious architectural solutions saw him getting involved him with all the decorative elements of his projects, including furniture. Over the years the great admiration of many modern designers for Gaudí furniture was understood by BD, which was the first company to rescue these historical artefacts creating a handcrafted series of reproductions using the same materials, varnished solid oak, including a whole wealth of details used in the manufacture of the originals. At BD contemporary creations have always gone hand-in-hand with those of the revered classical masters. Its re-editions of designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann and Giuseppe Terragni were already very well known. However, even more outstanding is the work behind the first production of the fascinating furniture created by Gaudí for some of his more iconic works.
