Antique Copper Fireplace Fender with Art Nouveau Floral Motif

About the Item

Antique Copper Fireplace Fender with Art Nouveau Floral Motif - Late 19th to Early 20th Century Add a touch of historical elegance to your fireplace with this antique copper fender, a beautifully crafted piece from the late 19th to early 20th century. Designed to protect the hearth while enhancing its aesthetic, this fender features a corner L-shaped form, making it a unique addition to a fireplace with an angled or irregular layout. Crafted from solid copper, the fender boasts a warm, reddish-brown patina with areas of verdigris, a natural greenish oxidation that adds depth and character, reflecting its age and authenticity. The surface has been lightly cleaned to preserve this patina, avoiding over-polishing to maintain its vintage charm. The fender is adorned with repoussé work, a traditional technique where the metal is hammered from the back to create raised designs on the front. The design features a repeating motif of stylized flowers—possibly tulips or lilies—connected by swirling vines, a nod to the Art Nouveau movement’s emphasis on organic, flowing forms. Measuring approximately 142cm in length, 10cm in height, and 40cm in depth, this fender is perfectly proportioned to frame a fireplace hearth, adding both function and beauty. It is in excellent antique condition, with minor wear such as small dents, scratches, and patina variations, which only enhance its historical appeal. The copper is structurally sound, ready to serve its original purpose or to be displayed as a decorative piece in a vintage-inspired interior. A rare find for collectors of antique fireplace accessories or Art Nouveau decor, this copper fender offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship and design sensibilities of the late 19th to early 20th century. Whether used to accent a working fireplace or as a standalone decorative item, it will bring warmth, history, and elegance to any space. Beautiful Art Nouveau Copper and Brass Fire Fender, circa 1890
Located in Heathfield, GB
A particularly good quality copper and brass fire fender with beautiful and elaborately cast sinuous solid brass corner spandrels of Art Nouveau design and a lovely planished copper front panel all set on flattened and beaded brass bun feet. In excellent original condition without damage and of a good large size, and with only minor and superficial marks and small dings consistent with age and careful use. In the 19th century most of the rooms in a house had a chimney for open fires and the fender would be placed to denote the hearth and stop logs rolling off and reaching the rug or soft furnishings. The fender is shown here with a pair of early 20th century brass firedogs and a duck basket...
