Pair of Rare Late Victorian 19th Century Aesthetic Movement Brass Firedogs

About the Item

Brass firedogs A Pair of Rare Late Victorian 19th Century Aesthetic Movement British Brass Firedogs by Benham and Froud. Available to buy a pair of 19th Century, late Victorian Brass firedogs made by the London metalworks Benham and Froud with the design attributed to Dr Christopher Dresser. The pair represent an unusual design, scarce and sort after. Benham and Froud marked the firedogs with their signature orb to the underside of each vertical. The firedogs comprise finely turned crossbars, more prominent in diameter than the lower ones and sit between uprights with sphere tops mounted on curved legs. Dr Dresser likely designed these firedogs as his style combined with the period matches his design characteristics. Dr Dresser was a British designer and a key player in the Aesthetic Movement, a fundamental contributor to the Anglo-Japanese style and the British Art Nouveau movement between 1850 and 1882.
