About the Item

An original antique 19th century -Victorian wrought iron fire grate basket in the Aesthetic Manner with its original sweeping chimney hood. A high Cartouche shaped fire back with a central stylised Dragon set within a cast frame, supporting side sections with forged vertical wave bars, flanked by shaped splayed footed post's. The fire front in the shape of a sunrise with three cushion spacers directly under, this piece is easily moved by the original brass roller wheels at the back. In the style of William Morris, circa 1882 Hooded canopy size: 600mm high x 520mm wide x 395mm deep. English, circa 1882. The Aesthetic movement was a late nineteenth century movement that championed pure beauty and 'art for arts sake' emphasising the visual and sensual qualities of Art & Design over practical, moral, or narrative considerations. The Aesthetic movement flourished in Britain in the 1870s and 1880s and was important equally in fine and applied arts. In applied arts it can be seen as part of the revolution in design initiated by William Morris, with the foundations of Morris & Co in 1882. From 1875 the ideals of aestheticism were commercialised by the Liberty Store of London.
