About the Item

An uncommon circa 1860 tall and substantial street light-style green cast iron water fountain from San Francisco, California. Fluted columnar form with beaded collars and stacked balloon finial. On octagonal base with four-hole rounded square mounting plate. Original forest green enamel finish is bright, well-preserved, and tightly adhered, with very handsome naturally acquired character. Twelve-inch-long faucet-like spigot with leaf decoration and horn-like hook for hanging one’s bucket or vessel while filling it. Water likely would’ve been continuously flowing into a basin or drain rather than hand-pumped on demand. Retains evidence of original forest green enamel finish along with antique layers of lighter green and off-white. Six-inch-long horizontal bar extending from the side would’ve been used for hitching one’s horse or hanging a bucket or coiled hose. Distinctive design and shade of green are very evocative of the iconic lamp poles that lined San Francisco’s streets at the time, many of which remain in use to this day along Market Street and the Embarcadero, and in places such as Golden Gate Park and the Castro. This strongly suggests that the fountain would’ve originally been situated in a similar location for use by the general public. Column circumference is 12.75” at midpoint. Mouth of spigot is 34.5” from the ground. Overall dimensions are listed below.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. In uncommonly good condition for its age and outdoor use. Enamel mostly intact, with expected areas of wear on top, around hitch, and on spigot revealing nicely patinated iron underneath. Some white paint splatter on top. More photos upon request.
