Carrara marble fountain, 19th century
About the Item
This corner fountain has an architecture and decoration in Carrara marble, and in Statuary Carrara for the central figure of the young child. It offers a perfect symmetry on a shell supported by aquatic foliage that blooms towards the center of the basin. The mouth of the river-god spouts water from the top of the fountain. From there it flows slowly in undulating streams, thanks to the very cut out contours of the shell. This water will form a natural curtain, a real ceremonial drape, for the central figure of the basin, a masterpiece of sculpture. A young child seated with webbed legs holds a floral garland in her left hand, and with her right hand she sketches a graceful and delicate gesture. This fountain is attributed to Rudolf Weyr (1847-1914), an important Viennese sculptor of the late 19th century. The fountain is dated between 1890 and 1895. This period marks the peak of the Viennese neo-baroque style, which began around 1870 and was very prolific in sculpture, revisiting both the Baroque and Rocaille styles, styles that are found on our sculpture.
