About the Item
Large Hand-Carved Linden Wood Wall Panels, Fairmont Golden Prague Hotel (Formerly Cosmopolitan Hotel), 1970s
An extraordinary set of three monumental hand-carved wall panels in linden wood, commissioned in the 1970s for the former Cosmopolitan Hotel Prague — now the Fairmont Golden Prague Hotel — a landmark of Brutalist architecture.
Crafted in the 1970s, these panels exemplify the era’s fascination with organic abstraction and sculptural surfaces. Each panel features a dynamic relief pattern carved directly into solid linden wood, with flowing, undulating lines and abstracted botanical forms that evoke nature’s rhythms. The design invites the play of light and shadow, creating an ever-changing visual depth throughout the day.
Executed with exceptional craftsmanship, the carvings retain a hand-worked quality that enhances their organic character. Linden wood’s fine grain and warm tone complement the fluid forms, while the natural patina developed over time enriches the panels’ texture and authenticity.
Originally installed in the Cosmopolitan Hotel Prague — a striking Brutalist building of the 1970s — these panels formed part of the interior’s artistic statement, merging Czech modernist architecture with handcrafted artistry. Following the hotel’s rebranding and renovation into the Fairmont Golden Prague, these original works have been preserved as important pieces of the building’s design history.
Each panel measures 220 cm (86.6 in) in height and 99 cm (39 in) in width, with a depth of 6 cm (2.36 in). Displayed together, they span an impressive total width of 297 cm (116.9 in), making them ideal for large-scale installations. Suitable for both private and public interiors, they can be mounted as wall art, integrated into architectural designs, or repurposed as dramatic room dividers.
