Mid 19th Century French Napoleon III Period Black Lacquer Planter or Jardiniere

About the Item

This exceptional French black lacquer planter or jardiniere table from the Napoleon III period features intricate bronze detailing and inset borders of inlaid bronze. A lid with bronze handles sets inside a pierced bronze gallery in the top and lifts out to allow access to its original zinc liner. Bronze banding borders the tabletop and trims the tapered fluted legs. The legs are further detailed with bronze rings at the top detailed with acanthus leaves and the fluting is appointed with bronze accents "en asperges" or like asparagus in English. The curved X stretcher at the base is crowned with a central bronze urn finial. Finished on all sides, this exquisite piece would be ideal as an indoor plant stand in the middle of a room or in a small entryway, circa 1860.
