About the Item
Cups in coconut such as this are especially uncommon and rarely appear on the world's art market. This is a very interesting piece for its fine and rich craftmenships metal silver decor, handmade in Early 18th century in the North part of Europe, probably in Netherlands.
To tell a few words about the beginning of use of coconut and silver for cups we can say that it t is interesting to know that during the 16th century, Portuguese traders imported coconuts to Western Europe from Africa and the Indies and these exotic products were greatly valued for their therapeutic properties. Sometimes very highly worked, the coconuts were transformed into cups and presented as luxury products in the cabinets or wunderkammer of well-known traders or powerful people.
