About the Item

Magnificent fruit bowl, empty pocket, centerpiece, bowl, Art Nouveau in green crystal with red floral decoration in the Japanese taste. The cup is enhanced with gold. The crystal is acid etched. Crystal work is wonderful. The cup seems to be attributed to Baccarat. It should be noted that Cristallerie Baccarat only engraved a signature on all productions from 1936. Which explains why this piece is not signed. The shape of the cup is reminiscent of a flower opening its four petals. The design is very delicate and elegant. In the style of Legras. French work from the 19th century, circa 1880 Art Nouveau Baccarat is a very renowned French crystal glassware. Baccarat received its first royal commission in 1823 from King Louis XVIII. It was the beginning of a long series of commissions for royal families and heads of state from all over the planet. In 1855, Baccarat participated in the first universal exhibition in Paris and received the great medal of honor. In 1870 the imperial era ended with the defeat of Napoleon and trade outside France began to have a greater influence on Baccarat's work, particularly imports from Japan. This cup is indeed very inspired by Japanese culture with this characteristic decoration of flowers at different stages of its evolution. Art Nouveau is an artistic movement that emerged in Belgium and very quickly in France at the end of the 19th century and until the beginning of the 20th century. It relies on the aesthetic of curved lines. This movement was born in reaction against the excesses of industrialization and the stagnation of art. Art Nouveau quickly experienced international development. At the end of the 19th century, Art Nouveau affected all visual arts, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture and decorative arts. A set of common characteristics create what we call the “Art Nouveau style”: elegantly curving lines, flowers, plants and other natural motifs. Art Nouveau was marked by renowned artists like Mucha, Lalique, Galé. At the time of the First World War, Art Nouveau gave way to a more angular and geometric style, Art Deco.
