Antique 17C Japanese Porcelain Blue White Edo Period Arita Vase Flowers

About the Item

Nice & Beautiful Arita Japanese Porcelain Vase, beaker shape. Landscape scene with figures. Thanks to Pater Gratia Oriental Art Beaker vase Japan 1680-1700 A large cylindrical trumpet-shaped beaker vase on footring with a flaring mouth and sides spreading towards the inset takefushi-shaped foot. Decorated in underglaze blue with two groups of flowering plants one with flowering peony the other with flowering prunus both groups are devided by grasses. Round the foot two concentric bands. The beaker form comes from Chinese Transitional ware but the angle cut-in of the sides above the foot became an Arita hallmark. Ko-Imari from the collection of Oliver Impey, (Barry Davies Oriental Art, London, 1997), pp.46-47, cat. 20. This large beaker vase was once part of a garniture which mostly consisted of three covered oviform-shaped jars and two cylindrical beaker vases with spreading mouths, all with the same decoration, They were very popular in The Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe, where they were used as decorative items in the interior. (Jörg 2003/1, p.259) The shape of the bulging foot, which spreads and then turns sharply inward, is seen on many ewers of this period as well as on later jars, vases and other pieces. It is a distinctively Japanese feature, called takefushi, 'bamboo-noded' foot. A Massive Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Plate by Kajiwara Kiln

On offer is a truly impressive blue and white porcelain plate of Hizen ware, from Arita in Japan, circa mid to late-19th century. The plate was made by Kajiwara Kikujiro (菊次郎, the second Kiku son) and/or Kajiwara Kikusaburo (菊三郎, the third Kiku son who died in 1883) of the Kajiware Family Kiln of in Arita. It was decorated in a superb design with blue under-glaze, clearly out of a hand of a master. In a Classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period, the plate displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged still in a surprisingly harmonious manner. Anchoring the center of the design is an eagle perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree, its talons clenching the bark and its wings about to open. The motion of the its immediate taking off is palpable.
