About the Item

This antique English pearlware plate, circa 1820, showcases a vivid red Bacchanalian scene framed by an elegant reticulated border with a geometric pierced design. At the center, a draped maenad plays a flute, symbolizing her role as a devoted follower of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry. At her feet rests a pinecone, representing the thyrsus—a ritual staff associated with vitality, pleasure, and the fine line between ecstasy and chaos. She is accompanied by a satyr, a half-human, half-goat companion of Bacchus, depicted with wild hair, holding two torches, and carrying a wineskin—symbols of uninhibited celebration. The rich red-orange transfer print and silhouetted classical figures recall the style of ancient Etruscan and Greek vase painting, a strong influence on the Neoclassical revival in early 19th-century British ceramics.
