About the Item

Rare majolica small tray or ashtray is shaped in form of bust of young woman wearing traditional Sardinian costume, leaning on her crossed hands with her eyes closed. White color of her shirt creates a perfect backdrop for her colorful headdress and beautifully detailed face. Alessandro Mola was a renowned sculptor and ceramist of the first half of the 20th century; he founded Ceramiche Mola, that eventually passed to his son Fabio and his grandson Alessandro Jr. In 1930s Alessandro Mola collaborated with the Essevi and the painter, ceramist and designer Sandro Vacchetti; his pieces were in production at Essevi from 1934 to 1952. In 1930s-1940s Mola collaborated with Lenci factory. In this period, he produced small female sculptures in Sardinian costumes, creating ceramics that were inspired by Sardinian traditions, but had strong modernist accent, such as his famous Head of Desulo. The tray is signed with "S. Mola Cagliari" on the bottom; lack of Italy or Made in Italy in signature suggests that the piece was intended for domestic markets. S. Mola in the signature indicates that the piece was hand painted by Stelio Mola. Bibliography: Alessandro Mola. La Ceramica Artistica a Cagliari Tra Essevi, Lenci E Folklore Sardo 1934-1957 by Marco Marini, Maria Laura Ferru.
