About the Item

This pair of Chamberlain's Worcester Porcelain dishes is intricately hand-painted with the "Dragons in Compartments" pattern, also known as the "Bengal Tiger" pattern. Painted in England circa 1840, the exquisite design showcases four gilt-edged, lozenge-shaped panels that alternate between mythical beasts and vases on a table. The wide border is decorated with green and orange gilded decorations in the Famille Verte palette. The pattern originated in England at Worcester in the 18th century. It represents an exotic English interpretation of Chinese export porcelains from the Kangxi period. The overall effect is fabulous! Dimensions: 8.5" diameter Marks: "Chamberlains Worcester" written in script with purple ink. Condition: Excellent Price: $2,700 Background of Chamberlains Worcester: Background of Chamberlain's Worcester: Robert Chamberlain and his son Humphrey were responsible for the decoration and gilding of the porcelains made in the original Worcester factory during the 1770s and 1780s. In 1793, they opened their own porcelain factory in Worcester. The painting and gilding of the Chamberlains Worcester factory met the highest standards of porcelain manufacturers during the period, and the factory enjoyed royal patronage. Japanese and Chinese 18th-century wares inspired several of the English porcelain manufacturers of the Regency period. Chamberlain's Worcester, in particular, produced many oriental-influenced patterns. Background of the armorial crest with stag: The stag represents one from a family of noble and chivalric background who has performed his duty to the king. A stag on an armorial crest is often associated with vigilance and is sometimes seen as a protector of the forest. The tree symbolizes life, growth, and strength. It represents a family's genealogical lineage and deep roots.
