Set of 3 Antique English Shell-Shaped Dishes Pearlware Circa 1825

About the Item

This set of three shell-shaped dishes is decorated with beautiful flower sprigs and small insects. The flowers include pink roses and other flowers painted in yellow, purple, orange, and blue, all with green leaves. The clean white pearlware background makes the colors of the flowers stand out. Each dish's lobed edge and handle are embellished with vibrant gilt. These dishes were painted at the Spode factory in Stoke-On-Trent in Staffordshire, England, circa1825. Marks: Impressed "SPODE" mark with Spode pattern number Dimensions: 9.25" from top to bottom x 8" wide x 1.5" deep Condition: Excellent Price: $640 Background of Early Spode: Josiah Spode I began the company in 1776. He died suddenly in 1797, and his son Josiah Spode II worked to perfect his father's accomplishments. In partnership with William Copeland, Josiah II continued the business for the next thirty years. Under their management, the company grew to be the largest pottery company in Stoke and a pre-eminent manufacturer of fine ceramics. Josiah Spode II was appointed "Potter to the Prince of Wales" when the Prince Regent visited the factory in 1806.

A set of four ceramic collectible trinket dishes with painted scenes. “The Cornfield” By John Constabl 1776-1837 Like Fen Lane, which hangs to the right, this study is thought to be one of the works Constable began outdoors in Suffolk in 1817, but did not finish. It too shows Fen Lane, but from further down.
