Rattan and Bamboo Tiered Nested Lunch Basket with Lid and Carved Handle
Located in Yonkers, NY
A vintage rattan and bamboo tiered nested lunch basket from the mid-20th century, with geometrical motifs, calligraphy and carved handle. This vintage rattan and bamboo tiered nested lunch basket from the mid-20th century captivates with its intricate craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage. The circular lid, adorned with woven calligraphy motifs, conceals independent compartments designed to store various items, reflecting its traditional use for carrying meals. The sides of the basket is further embellished with geometric motifs, adding an element of refined artistry that enhances its visual appeal. The basket's large handle, gracefully carved with delicate scrolling patterns flanking a wise man under a tree and accented with metal details, not only adds to its aesthetic charm but also makes it easy to transport. The combination of rattan and bamboo materials lends the piece a warm, natural patina that complements its handcrafted nature. In a modern home, this Chinese lunch basket...

Antique Amsterdam Bont Porcelain Tea Bowl Chinese Polychrome, 18th Century
Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland
A very nicely made 18th century Qianlong Amsterdam Bont porcelain bowl with a fantastic underglaze blue scene of a landscape Take a look at Amsterdams Bont porcelain from China. A relatively unknown niche of Chinese porcelain from ca 1680-1740 that was partly decorated in Europe. Because mainstream Chinese collectors have yet to discover the historical significance of these wares they are relatively easy to find in Holland. While also being highly interesting and of often super quality and with an amazing array of decorations. Amsterdams Bont is a name given to porcelain partly decorated in the Netherlands (most likely in cities like Delft, Haarlem, Makkum). Because Amsterdam was at this moment in time the trade centre of the western world and also of the porcelain trade a lot of this over enamelling was probably commissioned by Amsterdam merchants, to reap higher profits on otherwise boring Chinese wares. The name Amsterdam Bont probably derives from the fact that these type of decorated ware was sold by Amsterdam Merchants. Amsterdam Bont consists of either blanc or under glaze blue decorated Chinese porcelain of basic quality, that was later enhanced with red and sometimes other colours in the Netherlands. It must not be mistaken for other type of Chinese & Japanese blanc wares decorated in Europe. Those we simply call European Decorated Chinese porcelain...

Early Japanese Hand Basket with Brocade Interior by Suzuki Gengensai
By Suzuki Gengensai
Located in Atlanta, GA
This small elegant woven bamboo basket was meant to be a hand-hold bag with its brocade interior (which appears original). It was made by Suzuki Gengensai (1891-1950) circa 1910-20s. Suzuki Gengensai was from Kansai region and active in Osaka. He studied bamboo art under Yamashita Kochikusai (1876-1947) and became an independent artist in 1913. He received his artist name Gengensai in 1914 and in 1923 he changed the characters to Gen, a slight written variation of the character. This basket was signed in the former way, which helps to date the piece to the early part of the artist's career circa 1914-1923. The basket is tightly woven in variation of twill plating that creates contrasting bands on the surface. The base was constructed with short bamboo stripes on the corners and side with ornamental knots. A closely related piece (Object Number: 2006.3.651) with slight different surface twill patterns is in the collection of Asian Art Museum San Francisco. Comparing the two, they show almost identical form as well as the base construction. Both also have brocade interior and most likely were woven during the same period. Another documented example can be found on page 180 in "Baskets Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art...

Chinese Export Porcelain Plate with Judgement of Paris Scene Circa 1750
Located in Katonah, NY
An 18th-century Chinese export porcelain plate showing the Judgment of Paris. The delicately painted figures derive from a painting by Jean Paul Rubens. Made during the Qianlong Reign, circa 1750, the plate shows the goddesses Venus, Minerva, and Juno on one side and Paris on the other side. Charged by Jupiter to pick the most beautiful of the three, Paris selects Venus and awards her the golden apple. The scene shows Rubens' version of idealized feminine beauty. The rim of the plate is decorated with a rose-red flower band. Dimensions: 9 inches diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $900 Background This dish was made exclusively for the European market based on the well-known Greek story from Homer, in which Paris, the son of the King of Troy, had to choose between several Goddesses to decide which one of them was the most beautiful. According to Greek and Roman mythology, picking Venus as the most beautiful of the three goddesses...
