About the Item

This is a lovely antique Napoleon III gilt ormolu and green and white enamel rectangular trinket box, late 18th Century in date. The lid bears a superb Royal Monogramme, the letter E topped with a crown framed by two foliate ribbon corners. The borders are elaborately applied with patterned gilding. The cypher as depicted upon the lid of this Gilt and Enamel Trinket Box is that of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. It probably dates to the reign of Catherine as Empress which took place between the 9th July 1762 and 17th November 1796 rather than later. Catherine born as Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-ZerbstDornburgon on the 2nd May 1729 at Stettin, Pomerania, Prussia, the daughter of Christian August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst and Princess Johanna Elisabeth of HolsteinGottorp. She married her second cousin, Karl Peter Ulrich, the only child of Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and Anna Petrovna, the elder surviving daughter of Peter the Great on the 21 August 1745. Catherine’s husband in the fullness of time became Emperor Peter III of Russia. He proved to be very unpopular with his subjects and he was later deposed in a coup d'état in July 1762 (after which it is said that he was assassinated) and was succeeded by his wife Sophie as Empress and Autocrat of All the Russias taking the regnal name of Catherine II on the 28th July 1762. She was crowned as Empress in Moscow on the 22nd September 1762 The cypher signifies ‘Catherine II’, the Russian name for Catherine being ‘Екатерина’ and is ensigned with the Imperial Crown of Russia. Of, course at this distance in time it is not known whether this box belonged to Catherine personally or was a gift that she gave to members of her Court or other intimates and acquaintances. Catherine died on the 17th November 1796 from the effects of a stroke and was succeeded to the Imperial Throne of Russia by her son, Paul who became Paul I, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias. Paul I only reigned for a little over four years being assassinated by group of disaffected officers at St Michael’s Castle in Saint Petersburg on the evening of the 12 March 1801. He was succeeded by his son, Alexander as Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias.
