About the Item
Charming vintage cat shaped decorative box with lid features high gloss white luster glaze on outer surfaces and glossy white glaze on the bottom and on inner surfaces. The cat is sculpted in Modernist style with streamlined, minimal lines; it is depicted reclining with the body partially turned to the side, head slightly lifted up, one front paw curled up, another - placed straight, and the tail wrapped around the body. The cat's back serves as a lid; there is no handle, as the lid is ergonomically shaped. Beautiful luster glaze adds visual interest and textural qualities to the minimally shaped, monochromatic piece.
The cat is marked on the bottom with the manufacturer's stamp, Made in Italy, model number, and Bergdorf Goodman rectangular foil sticker; it comes with the original box. The cat is in very good vintage condition with almost no signs of use, but the cardboard box shows some age-appropriate signs of storage. The rare and unusual decorative box allows a great functionality; it can be used either as shelf of coffee table decor, as a storage box at bedside table or dresser, or as a candy box or a part of a serving tray. It will complement various interior styles, from Traditional to Contemporary, Hollywood Regency, Transitional, Modern, Eclectic, Glam, or Collected.
In the 1780’s Georolamo Franchini and French modeler Jean Pierre Varion opened a ceramics factory in Este, one of the most important ceramics production centers in Veneto region, as well as in Italy; they introduced the porcelain formula and created a remarkable amount of refined decor items, as well as functional items. In 1950s the semi-abandoned factory was purchased by Giovanni Battista Giorgini, with intent of reviving the traditions and techniques and bringing Franchini’s old works back to life by creating Este Ceramiche Porcellane. Instead of just reproducing past shapes and styles, Este Ceramiche reimagines the historic, traditional models, collaborating with some of the greatest contemporary stylists and designers; Este creations include an assortment of lamps, cachepots, candlesticks, boxes, vases, trays, and decorative plates that connect modern decor sensibilities with the history of the art of dining and interior décor.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
