Georgian Box with Domed Lid Cross Banded Mahogany and Satinwood, circa 1810

This is a beautiful, fine quality English Georgian period lidded box, inlaid with crossbanded mahogany and satinwood with a hinged domed lid, dating to circa 1810. The box has a rectangular shape and is handmade of different hardwoods, probably mahogany and satinwood which have been crossbanded in strips to the front and top. The domed top is a particularly fine and decorative feature of this piece. The domed lid is fitted to the base with brass hinges and there is a brass lock and escutcheon. We do not have a key to the lock. This box has developed a beautiful lustrous color and patination, particularly to its top, due to use, polishing and natural ageing of over 200 years. The inside of the box is partly lined with paper which has worn in places and the base has the wear one would expect with many years of use. We date this fine piece to the Late George III period, circa 1810. This item is very decorative and would make a good, useful jewelry or document box.
