Italian Venetian Gondola Shaped Ceremonial Casket
About the Item
Our rare, 18th century ceremonial casket in the form of a Venetian gondola is expertly carved from walnut with gilt cartouches depicting figures and swans, and gilt scrolling feet. The hull has the form of a stylized scallop shell with a lovely scrolling bow. It has a removeable top with windows on each side.
Boxes of this form were designed for the chief magistrate in Italian cities such as Venice and Genoa to hold and display ceremonial keys of the city that were gifts to important foreign visitors, and today. Extremely rare.
