About the Item

A stunning and rare antique Italian Renaissance revival hand carved wooden match holder and striker mounted with a sleeping putti by world renowned furniture maker and carved Luigi Frullini (Italian, 1839-1897) and dating from around 1890. Referred to as the Donatello of woodcarvers, the Florentine Luigi Frullini was celebrated for his virtuoso Renaissance revival carvings that often-combined naturalism and fantasy. A frequent participant in international exhibitions, the artist’s work was celebrated throughout Europe and the United States. Indeed, the figure carved on this box is similar to those portrayed on the carved panel titled Triumph of Bacchus held in The Met, New York. The hard wood, possibly walnut, hand-carved match box is of long rectangular shape with a fitted sliding cover which has an internal fitted stop to prevent it being removed. The cover is carved with a sleeping naked putti lying on a raised cushion with tassel corners. The box opens to reveal a match compartment with an inset striker to the base. The box is signed L. FRULLINI along the front edge of the cover and has a wonderful rich and deep reddy brown aged patina. A wonderful and exceptional example of this sought after artists work. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market In good condition with normal wear associated with age and use.
