Unusual Antique Carved Wood Figural Nutcracker and Bowl

About the Item

An unusual and stylish Continental, probably black forest, hand carved figural nutcracker and bowl dating from the latter 19th century. The softwood carved nutcracker and bowl are mounted on a rectangular wooden base raised on four ball feet. The nutcracker is carved as a tall man wearing an apron and hat with his arms folded in front of him. He has carved facial features with his mouth hinged with a lever behind to crack the nuts. The base is also mounted with a small turned wood bowl for the shells. The nutcracker is not marked however has a brown stained finish and a good aged patina and is typical of the character pieces carved by the craftsfolk of the Black Forest in southern Germany. Provenance: Acquired from the British Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use. .
