About the Item

Victorian Circa 1875 From our Jewellery Box collection, we are pleased to offer this stunning Coromandel and Mother of Pearl Jewellery Box. The Jewellery Box of rectangular shape beautifully veneered in exotic Coromandel wood with delicate swirls of brass stringing met with fleur de lis style brass inlays to the front and matching inlays with mother of pearl to the lid. To the centre of the top lid there is a scrolling motif with twin coloured brass mounted with mother of pearl foliage and a central mother of pearl initial plaque. The interior of the Jewellery Box is lined in Beige cushioned velvet with a partitioned top tray which can be removed to reveal a further storage section for larger Jewellery. The Jewellery Box dates to the second half of the 19th century during the Victorian era circa 1875. The Coromandel and Mother of Pearl Jewellery Box comes complete with working lock and key. Measurements (4.9 x 11.8 x 8.66 inches) Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer. Victorian an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.
