About the Item

Jewelery box, WMF - Germany, early 20th century Rectangular shape with scroll decorations, surmounted by a crown, internal fabric compartments, four curled feet, brand under the base. Interior lined in fabric, faded and has tears. Complete with key - slight wear on the silvering. The WMF Group is a German tableware manufacturer, founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige. WMF was originally called Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer and was opened as a metal repair shop. Through mergers and acquisitions, by 1900 they were the world's largest manufacturer and exporter of metal household items, mainly in the Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau style, designed in the WMF Art Studio under Albert Mayer, sculptor and designer, who was director from 1884 to 1914.
