About the Item

A marvellous little piece of porcelain from this little-known maker. A snuff box, modelled as Colombine from the Commedia Dell'Arte. The face would seem to be that of a particular actress, as the same face is used on a number of different models by this and other factories. The mount is of gold, and the eyes are tiny diamonds. There is a mark on the inside of the lid, in the form of an italic letter X, which has not been identified. Charles Gouyn was an 18th-century French jeweler and porcelain manufacturer, notable for his contributions to the European porcelain industry. He was active in London, where he established a reputation for producing high-quality porcelain objects. Gouyn is particularly known for his involvement in the Chelsea porcelain factory, which he co-founded with Nicolas Sprimont around 1744. The Chelsea factory became one of the most important porcelain manufacturers in England during the 18th century. Key aspects of Charles Gouyn's contributions include: Innovative Porcelain Designs: Gouyn's work at the Chelsea factory helped introduce innovative designs and high-quality porcelain to the British market. The factory produced a range of items, including tableware, figures, and ornamental pieces, often inspired by contemporary French and Meissen porcelain. The St. James's Factory: After leaving the Chelsea factory, Gouyn established his own porcelain workshop, known as the St. James's Factory or "The Girl-in-a-Swing" factory, named after a famous figurine produced there. This factory operated from around 1748 to 1758 and was known for its delicate and intricate porcelain figures and snuff boxes. Artistic Influence: Gouyn's work had a significant influence on the development of porcelain manufacturing in England. His pieces were characterized by their fine craftsmanship, attention to detail, and often included elements of Rococo design. Legacy: Though his factories were relatively short-lived, Gouyn's contributions to the porcelain industry are still recognized today. His works are highly valued by collectors and are considered important examples of early English porcelain. Charles Gouyn's life and work represent an important chapter in the history of European decorative arts, particularly in the context of the development of porcelain manufacturing in England.

Jasperware Buckle, Wedgwood, Matthew Boulton, Circa 1795
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
A jasper medallion decorated with Aphrodite, set in cut steel as a buckle, probably by Matthew Boulton. Original box. The Greek goddess Aphrodite is often depicted in ancient art with a dolphin. In mythology, dolphins were considered sacred to Aphrodite, and they were associated with love, beauty, and fertility. According to one legend, Aphrodite emerged from the sea on a shell-borne chariot drawn by dolphins, and the creatures were said to be her faithful servants. As a result, images of Aphrodite with dolphins became a popular motif in Greek art, appearing on vases, sculptures, and other decorative objects. The association between Aphrodite and dolphins has continued through the centuries, and the image of the goddess with a dolphin remains a popular symbol of love and beauty. Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) was an English manufacturer and entrepreneur who was best known for his contributions to the Industrial Revolution...
