About the Item

Pair of James Pradier Cold-Painted Bronze Candelabra – Superb Examples in Exceptional Condition A rare and distinguished pair of 19th-century candelabra by the celebrated French sculptor James Pradier (1790–1852), whose elegant neoclassical idiom and mastery of the human figure placed him among the most sought-after artists of the Romantic period. While renowned for his public monuments and portraiture, Pradier also devoted his talents to the decorative arts, working in close collaboration with the finest Parisian foundries to produce objects of refined beauty for the discerning collector. These candelabra exemplify the sophistication of his decorative output. Cast in bronze and finely cold-painted—a laborious technique that imparts subtle polychrome tonality to the surface—they achieve a richness of effect unattainable in plain patination. The design takes inspiration from nature: botanical stems rise elegantly from classical plinths, sprouting finely chased leaves and buds that support six candle arms apiece. Each nozzle is highlighted with gilt-rimmed detail, catching the light in striking contrast to the deeper patinated bronze. The bases, of black marble with gentle veining, provide a measured architectural balance, enhancing the naturalistic exuberance above. The marriage of botanical delicacy and classical gravitas speaks directly to Pradier’s artistic genius—his ability to blend sculptural poetry with functional form. In their day, such works would have adorned the grand salons of Parisian hôtels particuliers, commissioned by aristocratic patrons or the burgeoning bourgeoisie eager to surround themselves with objects of both taste and prestige. Cold-painted bronzes of this calibre were never produced in great numbers, and few survive in such fine and original condition. An exceptional opportunity to acquire decorative bronzes of rare beauty by one of France’s most important sculptors of the 19th century. Condition Report This exceptional pair of 19th-century cold-painted bronze candelabras is presented in excellent condition, showing only light, age-appropriate wear consistent with their period. The cold-painted surface retains a rich, even patina with minimal rubbing. The painted finish remains stable, with only the slightest surface wear visible under close inspection. The gilded rims of the candle holders are well-preserved, with bright gold highlights still evident and only minor softening from use. The botanical modeling of leaves, stems, and buds remains sharp and crisp, with no losses or repairs detected. The black marble plinths are in excellent condition, with natural veining intact. No chips, cracks, or structural repairs are evident. Both candelabras stand firm and level. All candle sockets are secure and original. An unusually well-preserved pair, with original finish and gilding substantially intact. Their superb condition enhances both their rarity and desirability for collectors.
