Pair of Palace Size First Empire Figural Bronze Candelabra Signed Rabiat, 1805

About the Item

An exceptional pair of palace size gilt and patinated bronze Rouge Griotte marble candelabra by Claude-Francois Rabiat, circa 1805. Each with a classically draped figure of Winged Victory, the Goddess Nike, holding foliate form candelabra with flame and butterfly wing motif, standing upon a stepped bronze mounted Rouge Griotte marble base. Condition: Original patina and gilding with consistent wear commensurate with age, the bronze elements in excellent condition. A very small abraision to the marble base and a minute area of professional, nearly undetectable restoration to corner of marble base. These candelabra were fitted for electricity at one point and can easily be electrified if desired. The underside of each of the bases signed Rabiat. A nearly identical pair of Rabiat candelabra was sold at Christie's Important French and Continental Furniture, Works of Art, May 2002, lot 471. The Christie's example with patinated bronze bases, Rouge Griotte marble in the present pair, a more luxurious variant. References: Claude-Frangois Rabiat (d. 1815), was apprenticed to Etienne Vignerelle in 1769 and established as maître in 1778. He regularly provided a variety of clocks and candelabra to other accomplished bronziers and horlogers including Thomire, Feuchère and Claude Galle. An example of this practice is firmly established through a documented pair of identical candelabra delivered on 23 December 1809 by the bronzier Claude Galle for the Boudoir of the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The inventory states Une Paire de Candélabras figures aillées, bronzées, sur une demi boule à feuilles, quatre branches tete de zéphir dorés en or mat. Prix demandé 600F. Règalé 590F.. These Petit Trianon candelabra are illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Grand Trianon, p.35, and H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Band II, p.705, fig.21. Further information on Rabiat can be found in D. Ledous-Lebard, 'Rabiat', L'Estampille/L'Objet d'Art, April 1991, p. 91. - Christie's, 21 May 2002 lot 471 A pair of wall-lights signed Rabiat is at Fontainebleau (see Musee National du Chateau de Fontainebleau, Catalogue des Collections de Mobilier, vol.1, Pendules et bronzes d'Ameublement entres sous le Premier Empire, p. 149, cat. 127). - referenced in a 1stDibs listing of a sold single large Rabiar candelebra.
