About the Item

Fine pair of Renaissance style patinated bronze candle holders in the manner of Edward F. Caldwell, late 19th century. Original medium brown patina with beautiful age appropriate sheen, excellent details. The capitals decorated with urn and foliate motifs, the stem knobed with rosette border and stylized scrolled elements, circular base with bold foliage, garlands and textured background on three wide scrolled feet. Edward F. Caldwell & Co was established in 1895 in New York City at 31 East 17th Street and quickly became one of the premier designers and manufacturers of fine lighting and decorative objects. Their commissions included J.P. Morgan's residence, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Vanderbilt Mansion, Henry Clay Frick residence, Harvard Club of New York, New York Public Library, Carnegie residence, Flatiron Building, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Waldorf-Astoria and The White House. The firm worked with some of the most preeminent architects of the period - McKim, Mead & White, Cass Gilbert, Carrere & Hastings and Goodhue & Ferguson. Their work has become synonymous with the great New York City landmarks created at the start of the twentieth century. The present candle holders may be easily converted to table lamps.
