About the Item

Antique French Champlevé Enamel Brass Gold Blue Chamber Candlestick French Brass, Enamel c. 1900 Dimensions: H x W x D: 6 cm x 16 cm x 9 cm This detailed chamber candlestick, crafted around 1900, showcases a complex and refined decorative technique. Chamber candlesticks - also known as chambersticks or hand candlesticks - were designed as portable lights to guide the way to the bedchamber. Although earlier forms existed before the 16th century, it was during that period that this particular design became widely used, as its name suggests, in private chambers. By the 18th century, these simple yet ingenious creations had grown in popularity, coinciding with the increased cultural emphasis on evening routines. The intricate champlevé enamelling technique is used extensively to decorate this piece. Champlevé is a highly complex and time-consuming process in which metal is carved, cast, or etched to create recessed areas, often arranged in striking decorative patterns. These recesses are then filled with enamel, and the piece is subsequently fired, causing the enamel to melt and fuse to the metal. The final step involves polishing the surface to achieve a smooth, lustrous finish. Shades of blue, red, and white enamel beautifully accent the piece, while the warm gold hue of the brass complements its intricate design. The wide base is both decorative and functional, designed to catch dripping wax. Extending from the base is a curved handle, allowing the candlestick to be easily carried from room to room. Although we no longer need chambersticks to light our way to the bedroom, this antique makes a charming decorative feature that can be placed throughout the home. Its rich history also makes it an excellent conversation starter.
