About the Item

Pair of French Gilt-Bronze “Salamander & Ivy” Candlesticks, Napoleon III period Cast and finely chased in gilt bronze, each candlestick rises on a tripod of scrolling paw feet that spring from a lobed, foliate plinth. A fluted, lance-like stem—echoing Gothic revival finials—is sinuously wrapped with ivy and scaled salamanders, a Renaissance emblem revived under the eclectic taste of the Second Empire. The waisted drip cup is ringed with acanthus and dart moldings, while the original gilding retains a mellow, honeyed glow with crisp burnishing on the high points. Dimensions (each): 11 ¾ in H × 4 ½ in W × 4 ½ in D (≈ 30 × 11.5 × 11.5 cm).
