About the Item

A pair of Art Nouveau or Secessionist WMF 'Britannia metal' (pewter) and silver plate candle holders. Both marked to the interior of the base 'WMFB' and 'OX'. This finish was used between 1900 and 1912 and was a thick silver plate with an oxidized finish. The plating and surface condition is very worn. The holders themselves were designed as vases, with a small glass insert for single floral stem display. The glass in this pair is long since lost. We offer them for alternative use as candle holders. The image provided shows a standard household candle which sits low in the holder. a buildup of wax will enable repositioning of candles as you prefer. Multiple tiny scuffs and much rubbing of the plate finish means that these are best suited to someone actively seeking the appearance of age and wear. They will tarnish and oxidise further if left without further polishing. They have immense charm and will bring delight to those who appreciate storied objects with character. They have an aged lustre which is very attractive in any light, but particularly by candlelight. A romantic addition to the table or mantle.
