About the Item

Antique French portico clock in Louis XVI style signed on the dial Gavelle Le, Rue aux Ours. This 18th c. style marble clock is composed of two columns in a shape of a obelisks in white marble and a statue of Goddess Minerva/Athena as well as suspended dial with free swinging sunburst Medusa head pendulum. The enamel dial is protected by a glass lens with oval bronze frame, inside are Arabic numerals indicating hours and minutes. The figure of the goddess is crafted from gilded bronze and is sculped with a shield and spear in her hands, the other elements that connects to her are ormolu bronze mounts on the front of the columns which contain ancient Greek like swords, armor, helmet. Athena or Minerva for Romans, was a goddess of wisdom, war, victory and justice; in Louise XVI style the antiquity inspired most of the elements, including the symbolism behind Greco-Roman religious figures. The obelisks are topped with marble spheres and beneath them is a gilded cornice with a leaf motif, surrounded by marble fence pillars connected with chains. In the plinth of the clock are ormolu friezes with grape vines and bows, supported by toupie fee.

"Late 18th Century - Kinable A Paris" Along a winding dirt path, the blind Belisarius carries his young guide. The boy has been bitten by a snake, which remains coiled around his bleeding leg. With his right arm wrapped limply around Belisarius's neck and his eyes closed, the youth balances precariously between life and death. Belisarius's eyes are also closed, but guided by his stick he moves forward with determination and purpose. He rises heroically against the spectacular sunset, a monumental figure creating a powerful outline against the sky. But the flaring sunset also signals a chill night and the uncertainty of the path ahead. Belisarius was a popular Byzantine general of the Roman Empire whose promising career was sabotaged by the jealous Emperor Justinian I.
