Mantel Clock 18th Century Louis XV Period by Gavelle L'e Aaria

About the Item

Antique French portico clock is crafted in Empire style during the reign of Napoleon in the 19th century. The Empire style gives the antique clock symmetry on either side. When observed closely, the two sides of the pedestal are printed with symmetrical gothic motifs. Typical motifs such as berries garland are bordered by mercury gilt bronze cascading down both sides. In addition, gilt bronze leaf frieze and berries garland leaf are also dotted from the top to the bottom of the clock. The structure of the antique portico clock is different from the mantel clock which has a dense and thick core. Portico clock brings a sense of freedom, breaking, minimalism but still keeping the standard aesthetic of Empire style. Every detail on this ormolu-mounted French portico clock is very expensive because of the talent and meticulousness of the craftsman Gavelle L'Aîné. The white marble pedestal is delicately carved step by step from the front and sides. The luxurious gold color of ormolu combined with the mysterious black color of black marble and the delicate white of white marble adds classiness to the entire structure of the clock. The three tones create a wonderfully coordinated resonance, especially the four Tuscan columns. Unlike Doric, ionic or composite columns, there are many textures along the column body and the pedestal at the base of the column and the top of the column. The Tuscan column looks strong, minimalist, and completely simplified to highlight the beauty of the enamel dial and the image of the gilt bronze woman who seems to be idly waiting for someone. The woman standing in the middle turned her face to the left as if waiting for someone. The round enamel dial clearly shows the Roman dial and Arabic numerals. Inside the watch, the gold-plated manual rotary movement at the back exudes elegance from the inside out. This antique clock has been overhauled many times to ensure flawless beauty and functionality.

  • Mantel Clock 18th Century Louis XV Period by Kinable À Paris
    Located in Warsaw, PL
"Late 18th Century - Kinable A Paris" Along a winding dirt path, the blind Belisarius carries his young guide. The boy has been bitten by a snake, which remains coiled around his bleeding leg. With his right arm wrapped limply around Belisarius's neck and his eyes closed, the youth balances precariously between life and death. Belisarius's eyes are also closed, but guided by his stick he moves forward with determination and purpose. He rises heroically against the spectacular sunset, a monumental figure creating a powerful outline against the sky. But the flaring sunset also signals a chill night and the uncertainty of the path ahead. Belisarius was a popular Byzantine general of the Roman Empire whose promising career was sabotaged by the jealous Emperor Justinian I. In 1767, a novel by Jean-François Marmontel revived interest in Belisarius. In Marmontel's novel, the emperor has the heroic general blinded, reducing Belisarius to begging. He is eventually rediscovered and aided by former officers and his family. This dramatic tale of patriotism, injustice, and redemption was widely embraced in revolutionary and post-revolutionary France and was a popular subject for artists--including Jacques-Louis David (François Gérard...
