$16,500

About

A stunning French 18th century Louis XV period/Louis XVI ormolu and patinated bronze clock, by Julien Le Roy, Paris. The clock is raised by four fluted supports centering a central floral design below a cabuchon ormolu band. At the center is a highly detailed and richly patinated bronze cherub sitting upon finely chased rocks and floral movements all in a satin and burnished finish. The enamel dial with pierced ormolu hands is framed within an ormolu case with a fine tied ribbon, berried laurels, and swaging drape. All original gilt and patina. Julien Le Roy (1686-1759) a renowned 18th century Parisian clockmaker and watchmaker. Born in Tours in 1686, by the age of 13, he had already made his first clock. In 1699, he moved to Paris for further training. He became Maitre Horloger in 1713 and later juré of his guild. Further appointments followed, including the Directorship of the Société des Arts, but the pinnacle of his achievement was being appointed clockmaker (Horloger Ordinaire du Roi) to king Louis XV in 1739.
