Allegorical Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze Cartel Clock Depicting "Night and Day"

About the Item

The clock features a cartouche shaped case housing an hour and half-hour striking movement with a round white enamel dial, indicating the Roman numeral hours and the Arabic five-minute intervals by means of two pierced patinated bronze hands. The case is finely chased with burnished gilt bronze adorned with C-scrolls, volutes, scrolling and branches with leaves. The clock is surmounted by cupid in his chariot drawn by doves, amongst clouds and a series of sun rays bursting out from the top. . The top symbolizes Daybreak. The lower portion or apron, terminates in bold scrolled acanthus leaves, and is adorned with cupid who is about to cover the goddess Venus, who is shown lying on a drapery, with a veil; this is an allegory of the Night. For two cartel clocks wit a similar sunburst cresting and figures on apron, refer to Pierre Kjellberg Encyclopadie de la pendule francaise Paris 1997 p. 103 figs C&D. Another very closely related example is illustrated in GIacomo Wannenes Le Piu Belle Pendole Francesi Milan 1991 p. 49 and a further cartel clock illustrated by Tardy French Clocks Paris 1981 p.307
