Biedermeier frame clock, circa 1850 Spring Balancer Daily Mechanism, 4/4 hour strike, enamel dial, glazed bezel, ornamented golden frame case, Austria circa 1850, signs of age and wear, no guarantee for function and completeness, 1 pendulum, 1 key Outer frame approximate 47 x 1.5 x 57cm Watch case approximate 31.5 x 12.5 x 42cm The watch has some repairs on the frame. Newer screws can be seen on the watch case. It is quite possible that parts of the watch case have been damaged. The enamel dial has some cracks and chipping, which may be for the age. Clock need a good clean and some TLC. The Biedermeier period is the period from the end of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to the beginning of the bourgeois revolution in 1848 in the countries of the German Confederation. In political history, the term Biedermeier is associated with the concept of restoration, which refers to the development of state politics after the end of the Napoleonic period and the Congress of Vienna. The term is significant as an epochal designation of cultural history, but as such is hardly clearly outlined, since many associations with the Biedermeier period date from the late 19th century and often have to be regarded as projected attributions. The term Vormärz is used to describe the opposing movement belonging to the same period, which sought a politically revolutionary change and found expression in writers such as Georg Büchner and Heinrich Heine, among others. The term Biedermeier refers on the one hand to the culture and art of the bourgeoisie emerging during this period, for example in home music, interior architecture and also in clothing fashion, and on the other hand to the literature of the time, which is often labelled "home-made" or "conservative". Typical is the flight into idyll and private life.
