French Louis XV pendulum clock model cartel d'alcove gilt bronze. BEECKAERT, 1760

About the Item

CARTEL D'ALCOVE MODEL CLOCK Chased and mercury-gilded bronze case. The upper part decorated with two acanthus leaves and ending with a feather pinnacle. The lower part also decorated with acanthus leaf shapes. White enamel dial with black enamel Roman numerals for hours and black enamel Arabic numerals for minutes. Finely engraved and decorated gilt hands. Charging hole (at 6) and hole for rewinding at time (at 12). Brass movement with hour and quarter chime on bell on demand, via the lanyard on the right side of the clock. Eight-day charge. Epoque Louis XV. Circa 1760. Signed on the dial BEECKAERT à Paris. Dimensions: 46 cm (height), 22 cm (width). Notes A very similar clock, but signed by watchmaker Ferdinand Berthoud, is published in the book "La pendule français - 2ème partie" on page 311. Jean-François BEECKAERT or Bekerr He was appointed maitre-horloger in 1746. He worked in Paris on rue du Petit Bourbon and later on rue de Bucy. Many of his works are now housed in the world's most important museums, from the Uffizi in Florence, to the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, to the Frick Collection in New York. Within the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is a portrait (shown below) of Marie Louise of Parma who later became queen of Spain, by the author Laurent Pécheux, where an elephant pendulum by Jean-François Beeckaert is placed beside the lady; the pendulum is now in the Uffizi Museum in Florence.
